CFD Personnel Reorganization – update 2

The Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), which oversees the 9-1-1 communications center, is set to implement a series of personnel changes that will take effect on January 1, 2012. These adjustments will impact both fire and police communication staff. Among the key updates for the fire department are the following: - Four senior alarm board operators will be demoted to the role of dispatcher. - Two dispatchers will be reassigned to become call takers. - At least five call takers will face job losses. Currently, a senior alarm board operator is stationed at both the Englewood and Main operations centers per shift. Starting January 1st, one individual will be responsible for managing both areas of the city. According to a post on the OEMC Facebook page, pink slips and demotion notices were handed out to 911 operators on Friday, December 16, 2011. From CBS Chicago: An OEMC supervisor, Shanita Carter, expressed concerns about the potential consequences of cutting back on already overburdened 911 call takers. She warned that these cuts could significantly affect the quality of emergency service in the city. “Chicago is in serious trouble if they don’t provide proper support,” Carter said. “In high-crime areas, there’s already a delay in response time — and I live in one of them. This will only make things worse. They’re not just targeting call takers; they’re also looking to cut supervisors. These supervisors are essential — they train, motivate, and support the call takers. They're already stretched thin and completely burned out.” Carter emphasized that the current team is operating under extreme pressure and cannot handle any more reductions. Earlier this week, 28 aldermen signed a letter expressing concern over city budget cuts, with some arguing that certain reductions go too far. The proposed cuts to the OEMC, along with similar reductions in other departments like libraries, have raised alarms about the potential loss of hundreds of jobs.
